Arahmaiani’s (b. 1961 Bandung, Indonesia) work deals with contemporary politics, violence, critique of capital and the female body. Her own identity as Muslim mediates between Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and animist beliefs. She combines her critical attitude toward Islam with a fight against its general stigmatisation. Since 2010 she has been working with Tibetan monks at the Tibet Plateau to deal with environmental issues.
Arahmaiani is one of the participating artists of the exhibition On the Nature of Botanical Gardens (2020), curated by Sadiah Boonstra at Framer Framed, Amsterdam.
