Mirjam Shatanawi teaches heritage theory at the Reinwardt Academy of the Amsterdam University of the Arts in Amsterdam. In addition to her work for the Reinwardt Academy, she conducts research on the absence of Indonesia in the narrative of Islamic art and culture in Dutch museums. On 13 May 2022, she received her PhD with honours from the University of Amsterdam with her dissertation Making and Unmaking Indonesian Islam. Legacies of Colonialism in Museums.
From 2001 to 2019, she worked as a curator at the Tropenmuseum, and from 2014 at the National Museum of World Cultures (Tropenmuseum, Museum of Ethnology, Africa Museum) and the World Museum. She created several exhibitions for these museums, including The Sixties: A worldwide happening, Escher Meets Islamic Art, Palestine 1948 and Urban Islam.
Mirjam Shatanawi is co-editor of Islam and heritage in Europe: Pasts, Presents and Future Possibilities (Routledge, 2021) and author of Islam at the Tropenmuseum (LM Publishers 2014) and Islam in beeld: kunst en cultuur van moslims wereldwijd (SUN 2009), in which she takes a critical look at the history of the Tropenmuseum’s Islamic collections. She held various board and advisory positions, including at the Council for Culture, the Mondriaan Fund, MTNL and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. Since March 2019, she has been part of the Supervisory Board of Framer Framed.
