Family Embodiment Programme: Ritual 1 - Becoming Wind(s)
The Family Embodiment Programme is a monthly ritual that begins with the question: how do we become a family? It is tailored to an intersectional community of queer and BIPOC migrants, inviting participants to explore feelings of (un)belonging and to practise care together.
The experimental ritual is a space to share emotions and personal stories, reimagine the concept of family and cultivate group healing and community resilience. Through visual art and embodied practices, the aim is to deconstruct the ‘family’ from its institutional constraints and re-envision it as an artistic form of more-than-human kinship. Participants are welcome to participate in whatever way feels authentic, whether it’s through sharing or simply by being present with the group.
This first ritual centres on a semi-fictional narrative about ‘Wind’, a protagonist from the Molenwijk neighbourhood searching for a family. In this fairy tale, the story is interwoven with real-life interviews about the re-making of family. The ritual is an invitation to embody Wind’s spirit and embrace its non-human, non-binary, ever-changing, migratory essence. Through a series of activities such as drawing sessions, a breath ceremony, a sharing circle and a communal reading performance, stories of migration, queer kinship and family wisdom are unfolded, guiding participants toward new ways of becoming family(s).
The ritual begins with an incense ceremony, welcoming everyone into a ‘scentscape’ of the Molenwijk. A group of incense sculptures, collectively created this spring by the local queer and migrant community, are present in the space. They embody the shared family wishes and serve as a welcome to new queer and BIPOC migrant families.
To contribute to the collective ritual space, please bring an object that holds a family meaning for you.
