Hacking History, 5 mei 2012, 16:30 uur, bij Monument Indië Nederland op de Apollolaan, Amsterdam. Aansluitend diner om 18:00 uur in het Amsterdams Lyceum Valeriusplein 15, Amsterdam.

We invite you to the program Hacking History. An open brainstorming about the relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia and its representation in public space. This program will take place on the 5th of May 2012. Starting at 16.30 at the Monument Indië Nederland at the Apollolaan in Amsterdam. ‘Hacking History ‘ is part of the urban programming on Liberation Day, organized by the Amsterdams Comite 4 en 5 Mei, in cooperation with Framed Framed.

The former Van Heutsz monument at the Apollolaan in Amsterdam has been subject to debate and controversy ever since its construction in 1935. This monument that was once a tribute to the deeds of General Van Heutsz has assumed a new name in 2001 when the city council changed its name into the Monument Indië Nederland in remembrance of the Dutch colonial history. While most people are aware of the history of the monument and the period to which it refers, some are not. Given the importance of our problematic colonial history, we should operate bringing the dense historical significance that the monument represents forth to the audience that remains unknowledgeable of its meaning. We would like to see this monument gaining importance once again.

Outdoor program & Performance
16.30: outdoor performance near the monument by the artists Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum with the participation of the poet Olympia Latupeirissa, writer Sarah Klerks and performer Bo Tarenskeen.

Diner
18.00: start dinner (€ 15,-) at the Amsterdam Lyceum.
During dinner, several guests will reflect on the monument, including:
Yvonne van Genugten, Director of the Indisch Herinneringscentrum, Arnhem;
Nancy Jouwe, Director Kosmopolis Utrecht;
John Jansen van Galen, journalist, researcher and author;
Sylvia Pessireron, author.
