As part of the Open Archief project, Framer Framed hosts Altaring Archives, two workshops led by Chimira Obiefule and Savannah Wolin on 17 and 18 January. The workshops are given within the Re:Use Clinic format. These clinics are workshops and presentations inviting archival institutions and artists to discuss the use of archival material. The knowledge of Chimira and Savannah is combined with Open Archief resident mo Futures‘ research into Black Queer histories in the Netherlands.

On Saturday, Chimira Obiefule hosts a creative workshop where they guide participants in working with personal and public archival materials to create small altars, collectively or individually. During the workshop, Chimira shows their experience with honouring archival materials, people and histories. They share their knowledge about the ethical and spiritual dimensions of working with archives, as well as how to see and create beyond the material.

About

Chimira Obiefule is a Nigerian-Venezuelan artist, researcher and educator whose practice moves across sound, ritual, writing, and performance. Rooted in Igbo cosmologies and Black queer feminist traditions, their work engages grief, memory, and ancestral presence as sites of knowledge and transformation. Through sonic lectures, workshops and embodied gatherings, Chimira explores how voice, improvisation, and collective care can open pathways for healing, refusal, and liberation beyond dominant archival and colonial frameworks. Their work is grounded in community and somatic practices that honour both the material and the unseen.

Savannah Wolin is a director, writer and public speaker. In her art she aims to bring a nuanced and multifaceted portrayal of stories that are often not being told. Through making use of her education in sociology she lays bare the systemic that intertwines with the personal.

mo Futures is a visual artist, writer and time-traveler. “i create through, from, with & beyond Archives, in order to build Worlds away from a ‘here’ or *now*; Dreamy, Joyful, Wayward spaces in different forms and Timelines. I have been fabricating an extensive Archive of vernacular photo- + videography, (self)portraiture, writing, collages, multi-media installations and more, showcasing Black Queer n Trans existence in western europe. An experimental, d.i.y., Future-Archive that serves as an offering for generations to come.”

Open Archief

Open Archief is a multifaceted, collaborative project that explores the potentials of what can be inspired by making archival material accessible to artists for creative reuse. It was initiated by three Dutch heritage institutions: Nieuwe Instituut, Sound & Vision, and the International Institute of Social History. Framer Framed joined as a partner in 2025. Open Archief urges and supports residents to make use of digitised and open archival collections. Open Archief brings artists, researchers and heritage institutions together to discuss the importance of creative reuse of heritage and of making digital collections available.

The visit of Chimira Obiefule is made possible by the International Visitors Programme of the Nieuwe Instituut with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
