Memoria Plantae: Perspectives on the Dutch Botanical Network

On the 10th of December you are invited to be part of a conversation in the lead-up to our next exhibition, On the Nature of Botanical Gardens (2020), curated by Sadiah Boonstra.

Starting from the establishment of a Dutch Botanical Network in the seventeenth century, the aim of this evening is to take a broad view on botanical gardens and to critically examine them. Behind the seeming innocence of idyllic nature, these gardens were created to build colonial knowledge about plants and resources at large and therefore contributed to the building of colonial power.

While the exhibition will look at the exploitative approach of this knowledge system and the legacies and consequences it has had on both nature and people, the event on the 10th of December offers a panoramic view of the Dutch Botanical Network and its histories. Featuring in the panel discussion are exhibition curator Sadiah Boonstra, Science, Technology, and Culture researcher Andreas Weber and Black Heritage Tours founder Jennifer Tosch.

Before and after the panel discussion you can visit the current exhibition Elsewheres Within Here (2019), curated by Jo-Lene Ong.

The event is FREE and in English.

Memoria Plantae: Perspectives on the Dutch Botanical Network is organised in collaboration with the Westfries Museum and supported by DutchCulture.
