Raki Ap works as a civil servant at the Ministry of the Interior. Originally from West Papua, Ap fled to the Netherlands along with his mother and three brothers after the murder of his father Arnold Ap. Ap later entered the Dutch army out of a desire to contribute to international peace and security. His military experience structured his youth and provided him with the discipline, knowledge and experience, which he has used for his role as a storyteller in the last 10 years.
Ap is also an activist committed to politics, human rights and climate activism — because in West Papua all three elements have common ground. In the Netherlands, he works to give the climate debate a more indigenous perspective. He tells the story of West Papua with passion, as one that includes all elements (politics, human rights and environmentalism) so that we can inspire each other to act upon climate change.
