CICC School London – Indigo Resistances: Sonic and Textile Testimonies
Framer Framed & Serpentine present an afternoon with visual artist duo Antonio Jose Guzman and Iva Jankovic within the context of the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC) in London, entitled The British East India Company on Trial. Guzman and Jankovic reflect on their multidisciplinary decolonial practice and the textile works they create at Sufiyan Khatri’s workshop in Gujarat, India. Their work integrates indigo textiles, soundscapes, and performances, exploring the complex interplay of colonialism and migration in today’s global landscape.
The session responds to the CICC hearing against the British East India Company, which focuses on the colonial legacies of the indigo trade. On 13 April, Guzman and Jankovic present a sonic lecture for the CICC School further contextualising indigo as a site of historical resistance and artistic practice – a diasporic map connecting material research to sonic histories of agriculture, trade and migration. Following the lecture, a conversation with the artists will be moderated by iniva’s curator Beatriz Lobo.

About
The CICC is a project by Radha D’Souza and Jonas Staal that stages public hearings in immersive installations functioning as a court, to prosecute intergenerational climate crimes committed by states and corporations acting together. These hearings address crimes of the past, present and future, reflecting the intergenerational impacts of climate crimes on ecologies and communities.
This newly commissioned chapter of the CICC consists of a specially appointed court constructed within the former concrete hall of Ambika P3 in London. It was in London that the East India Company was founded in 1600, and where the corporate entity would subsequently shape the city in its own interests and image. The court will interrogate witnesses regarding the crimes committed by the British East India Company, highlighting the interconnectedness of colonial and climate crimes that continue to shape our devastating present and future.
The second public hearing, taking place on Saturday 5 April explores the connections between the indigo trade, the East India Company and the British Crown, and the ways in which they establishing agribusinesses which destroying interdependent ecologies.
Iva Jankovic is a Dutch-Yugoslav visual artist. Located in Amsterdam, she creates in Nederland, Gujarat and Serbia. Merging her traditional fine arts education with crafts she’s transforming ideas into performance pieces, installations and unique garments. Her fascination for communal memories is furthering a theory of homogeneity in human thinking. By deconstructing cross-cultural symbols and bringing them to a local environment she’s asserting sustainability as a way towards decolonisation.
Antonio Jose Guzman is a Dutch-Panamanian visual artist renowned for his work on issues of social justice, pattern research and the colonial history of textile, highlighting the positive role of migration, social transformation and community engagement. Guzman creates installations and multidisciplinary works inspired by reflections on Diasporic Identities, storytelling and cultural analysis. His projects allow us to cross different time zones, unexplored worlds and realms; bringing us into what Guzman calls time travel perceptions.
This event is held in partnership with iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), who have been working with Guzman and Jankovic on their project Concrete Roots (Electric Dub Station Series), which will be presented at the upcoming Liverpool Biennial and at the Stuart Hall Library in the summer 2025.
