De Asielzoekmachine The Dutch Asylum Machine is a cross-media project that investigates the complex world of Dutch asylum policy and offers citizens an opportunity to think alongside. It consisted of a series of events and meetings, exhibitions, an online documentary, a TV documentary, and two radio documentaries.

For the Dutch version, more than 40 people from the asylum world were interviewed: (rejected) asylum seekers, lawyers, immigration judges, scientists, policymakers, civil society organizations, and social workers. In video fragments, they give their perspective on the dilemmas around policy implementation. Who is a ‘real’ refugee? Should an asylum seeker be able to work? How do you deal with people who are due to be deported but don’t want to leave? How are Immigration Services handling the influx of refugees? The various perspectives help viewers to form, sharpen or adjust their opinion in order to answer the question: What do you think? Now, this groundbreaking project is looking passed Dutch borders.
