The Other Voice in the Fairy Tale
On 10 Aug, writer and performer Lova Yu invites participants to rethink the dominant narrative of The Little Mermaid and similar fairy tales. Instead of identifying with the heroine, traditionally positioned as the object of desire, this workshop explores what it means to inhabit the marginal voices: Ursula, the sisters of the mermaid, the prince, the sand on the beach or the seafoam.
The Other Voice in the Fairy Tale, alternatively titled Do we have to cry to be the main character of a fairytale?, stems from a desire to challenge the roles that have been idealised and to give space to the parts that have been silenced. Participants are invited to bring a version of a fairy tale they grew up with. Through collective reading and retelling, this story is re-examined from a different point of view.
The workshop questions who gets to be the protagonist in a story, why suffering is often central to feminine-coded roles and how stories can be re-narrated when certain identities are seen as wrong, excessive or marginal.
Participants are encouraged to respond in whatever format feels most comfortable, whether through writing, speaking, drawing or another form. No prior writing experience is needed and support is available throughout the session. Please sign up here.
This workshop is part of the initiative to open up THE TAILÂ as a space for queer and trans communities to connect, create and share. Framer Framed welcomes proposals from collectives, artists and organisers who wish to host public or community-based events in the installation.
This workshop is in English. Admission is free.
