Songs of Freedom: Een herdenking voor Haacaaluu Hundeessaa
Join us at Framer Framed on the 29th of June from 16:00 to 21:00 to commemorate the second anniversary of Haacaaluu Hundeessaa’s death, organised by the We Sell Reality collective.
Haacaaluu Hundeessaa was an Ethiopian singer, songwriter and civil rights activist who was known for his songs of protest. On the 29th of June 2020, he was fatally shot, triggering widespread protests throughout the country and the subsequent deaths of 239 people. The Oromo community, which constitutes one of the largest nationalities, cultures and languages in Ethiopia, was particularly affected by the news of his death, as Hundeessaa’s songs were prevalent in the 2014 youth uprisings against the expansion of Addis Ababa into Oromo territory. The evening will reflect on the current political situation in Ethiopia, as well as the important contribution Hundeessaa and his listeners made to uniting identities in the Oromo community, across the country and in the diaspora. Through speeches, prayers, music and food, we invite you to celebrate the life of Hundeessaa and the politics he stood for.
This event is free and is in Afaan Oromo and English.
