Tirza Balk
Tirza Balk is an artist based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tirza uses poetry, music and movement to respond to questions of extractivism and displacement. They are interested in memory, unlikely alliances and what it takes for people to escape the roles they were assigned in keeping the world as it is.
Tirza Balk participated in the two-year temporary Master program Planetary Poetics (2023-2025) at Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, co-hosted by Framer Framed. They spent this period researching colonial recruitment strategies across four continents and generations, drawing on fantasy and world, as well as personal, histories to identify – and interrupt – patterns of ethnonationalism and war. In their practice, Balk seeks to pair these interrogations with an uncompromising excitement for life on this ancient planet. In 2025 the Planetary Poetics graduation show was presented at Framer Framed, accompanied by a public programme of activations including performances, readings, talks, a puppet show, live-radio shows, and a walking tour.
