Symposium: Dealing with the Real Stuff
Dealing with the Real Stuff, initiated by lecturer and researcher Nathalie Roos in collaboration with the Breitner Academy, Hogeschool van Amsterdam and Framer Framed, investigates and develops a pedagogical approach to art as citizenship education. The three-year project, which began in September 2022, concludes on 9 October with a symposium and book launch.
How can art and activism in education contribute to critical citizenship? This question is central to the symposium. You’re taken into the world of activist art and education through performances, presentations and workshops that encourage thinking and action. In addition, the book Dealing with the Real Stuff is presented, an inspiring publication full of practical tools for cross-curricular art and citizenship education.
The symposium marks the conclusion of the multi-year project Dealing with the Real Stuff. In this project, Roos investigated how art can contribute to citizenship education, inspired by the working methods of contemporary activist artists. This resulted in an interdisciplinary minor for students of art education and social studies and an in-depth practical study of the relationship between art, activism, and education.
