Coffee Tastes Like Coffee: Coffee Ritual and Book Launch of Cocuyo

Come by Werkplaats Molenwijk in Amsterdam-Noord on Monday 28 October 2024 for a book presentation and workshop uncovering some of the histories behind coffee, with artists Ana Tomimori and Carlos Felipe Guzmán from the project Proyecto Cocuyo. The morning includes a coffee tasting workshop and the launch of their publication Cocuyo, including a communal reading and a contribution by Framer Framed guest researcher Elham Puriya Mehr.

In 2017, artists Ana Tomimori and Carlos Felipe Guzmán moved to a rural area in Cundinamarca, Colombia. They settled in a family home that once belonged to Guzmán’s grandparents. The house, built in the early 20th century, holds the history of Colombia. An abandoned mill, a royal road, a highway, train track ruins, coffee and the mountain all contribute to its wild, inaccessible character. While living there and managing the Cocuyo Art Residency, both artists became farmers, cultural managers and part of the local community of a small town in the eastern Andes Mountain range. They discuss this project, called Proyecto Cocuyo, in their new book Cocuyo.

Cocuyo is a publication Tomimori and Guzmán developed during their residency at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. The book compiles texts, images and memories of Proyecto Cocuyo, their initiative aimed at restoring a traditional agroforestry coffee farm located in a Colombian mist forest. Other contributors are Emily Shin-Jie Lee, Sylvia Suárez and Tania Fuentes. The artworks and photographies were made by Proyecto Cocuyo members and previous artists-in-residence Nicolas Baresch, Tania Fuentes & Camilo Cuervo, Andrea Marín, Álvaro Cabrejo, Karen Moya and Andrés Salas.

Coffee Tastes Like Coffee: Coffee Ritual and Book Launch of Cocuyo is a book presentation and workshop looking for hidden histories behind the coffee supply chain while presenting the differences between coffees, their taste, flavour and production methods. During the workshop the participants join a coffee tasting session, comparing the smell and flavour of four different arabica and robusta coffees while they are being read from Cocuyo.

This event takes place at Werkplaats Molenwijk, Molenaarsweg 3-5 in Amsterdam-Noord.
This workshop is specifically aimed at Molenwijk residents. The workshop and communal reading will be in Dutch, English and Spanish.
