Finissage: Scattered - Hidden Narratives Through Archives
Save the date for the finissage of the exhibition Scattered: Hidden Narratives Through Archives, an exhibition initiated by curator and researcher Nesli Gül, on the 16th of April 2023. Scattered looks into the interactions of visual artists from Turkey who settled in the Netherlands with the Dutch art scene, a little-known and undocumented part of the contemporary art history of the Netherlands.
Programme
15:00 – 15:30 Talk by Nesli Gül
Exploring the artistic legacies of artists who moved from Turkey to the Netherlands through archives sheds light on how artistic practices intertwine with memory, identity, and diaspora by questioning transcultural dialogue in the Netherlands. Despite the evolution of mediums, methods, and concepts used by artists over time, their work brings a unique perspective on the contemporary understanding of sociocultural references keeping up with the changing perspectives in art. In light of ongoing research on The Impact of Contemporary Artists, from Turkey, on Dutch Art Ecosystem, the talk will present the various dynamics that come into play with migration, relocation, and internalisation during the development, production, and implementation of artistic practices, taking into account cultural, social, and political contexts.
15:30 – 16:00 Artists Talk with Müge Yilmaz and Merve Kılıçer
Nesli Gül in conversation with Müge Yılmaz and Merve Kılıçer. This talk is about the stories, ideas and processes behind artists’ work and provides insight into their varied practices between the material and immaterial world. While the two artists have a wide range of practices, both have addressed the interconnection between the protection, preservation and body in various ways. During the talk, Yilmaz, and Kılıçer will explore a range of topics from belief and identity to individual and collective memory, including the concepts of their works in the exhibition and their perspective on the exhibition.
Break
16:15 – 16:50 Performance Letter to N by Özgür Atlagan
Özgür will perform tracks from the album Letter to N, which brings together synths and field recordings with short stories and fragments of texts written between 2016-2021. The stories are poetic takes on the justice system, torture, capital punishment, urban transformation, and plunder. The performance will be in Turkish, English translations will follow on a monitor. Letter to N was released as a cassette tape in 2021 by Het Generiek.
The album Letter to N is realised with the support of Hinderrust Fonds, Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and SAHA.
17:00 – 17:45 Conversation with Bülent Evren and Wouter Welling
Scattered focuses on several personal and institutional archives, and one of them, the archive of Bülent Evren, constitutes a part of the exhibition and Nesli Gül’s ongoing research. In the exhibition, a part of the archive of artist, educator and advisor Bülent Evren is shown to capture the hidden memory of artistic activities in the Netherlands from the late 1980s to the 2000s. In this context, Evren unveils the stories behind the archive materials and interprets the content of the materials and their importance in the art scene.
Artworks, historical documents and archival materials related to artists are mostly inaccessible by the public, as held by institutions or private individuals. Curator of contemporary art at the National Museum of World Cultures, Wouter Welling keeps the archive and works of Esma Yigitoglu one of the first-generation artists from Turkey in the Netherlands that will help us to follow the traces of Yigitoglu in the Dutch Art Scene, the role and importance of archival materials for non-canonical art history and transcultural interactions.

Call for support for those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria
On 6 February 2023, two powerful earthquakes of 7. 7 and 7. 5 magnitudes struck in Turkey and Syria, impacting 15 million people living in a vast region. As we mourn the loss of over 44,000 lives, winter conditions aggravate the situation of those who lost their homes and families amidst ongoing quakes.
During the exhibition, editions of a ‘Memory Game’ will be available to buy, with contributions by artists featured in the exhibition. All proceeds from the game will go to Artists in Solidarity NL, who are raising funds to support local grassroots organisations and initiatives that are working on the field in Turkey and Syria.
Listing government organizations and NGOs operating in the region, we would also like to share an updated list of reliable NGOs and artists’ initiatives edited by the SAHA team. You may find their info and bank details for donations in this file.
