Baati as Archive: Somali Textile Culture, History, and Ecology
On 10 January 2025, as part of the current exhibition The Anarchist Citizenship: People Made of Stories, Framer Framed hosts artist and educator Kinsi Abdulleh and writer and community organizer Philsan Osman, who will look into textile practices and the eco-knowledge systems that have informed Somali and Somali diasporic cultural and environmental practices.
Over the past decade, the Baati/Shiid has become a global pop-cultural phenomenon, deeply rooted in the Somali region. Textile ancient cities such as Zeila, Mogadishu, and Berbera have long been recognized as historical hubs of the textile industry, serving as cultural anchors for Somali cultural traditions and rich material culture. The Baati/Shiid is the archive that brings together Somali women’s cultural practice and the politics of dress as a vessel for stories. By exploring these cultural legacies, we will examine how ancient Somali knowledge(s) can be reclaimed and reimagined to fuel community engagement and environmental stewardship for the future.
