Abdelkarim Qassem

Abdelkarim Qassem is a visual artist from Saudi Arabia. He holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from the King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. Qassem is part of a group of young artists who studied together in Al Miftaha arts village in Abha. He took part in the legendary ‘Shatta’ (Disembodied) exhibition in Jeddah, 2004, which is seen as the starting point for the contemporary art movement in Saudi Arabia. In 2005 his first solo show, Soft White, took place in Jeddah.

Aside from his practice as a visual artist, Qassem also works as a trainer for psychological diagnosis through graphology. He also has a day job as a soldier in the Saudi army, which sent him to the border with Yemen for a tour of duty in 2009, leading to the film shown in this exhibition. His video work Evacuation was part of the group show Crisis of History at Framer Framed (Amsterdam, 2014) curated by Rober Kluijver.
