Terror Element travels to POST – Nijmegen

Terror Element by Anna Engelhardt and Mark Cinkevich is a hybrid documentary that examines the fallibility of truth through the lens of forensic science and investigative. The work will be featured in the group show, States of Violence at art platform POST in Nijmegen. The artwork was commissioned by Framer Framed in 2024 with the support of the Nederlands Filmfonds and Stimuleringsfonds voor Creatieve Industrie as part of the collaborative project Immerse/Interact.

Artists Anna Engelhardt and Mark Cinkevich explore the complexities of forensic science and the concept of truth, examining the blurred lines between reality and fiction in the portrayal of events. With a combination of CGI and archival footage, Terror Element follows Nina, a forensic expert, as she confronts the unsettling truths behind a series of 1999 explosions in Russia. The film challenges the audience to question the reliability of forensic evidence and the narratives constructed around it, in a thought-provoking exploration of power, truth and the role of technology in contemporary society.

States of Violences opens at POST on 27 February 2026. See more about the exhibition below.

When we read the newspaper or scroll through our social media, we are confronted with a world that is becoming increasingly unstable and hostile. The world has never been a completely peaceful place, but research shows that there has been an undeniable increase in violence in the 21st century. Both nationally and internationally, violence occurs more quickly, is more extreme, and is less controlled or prosecuted. What role do far-right, fascist movements and dictatorships play in this? And what about the declining power of alliances and unions that are supposed to enforce international laws?

The exhibition States of Violence focuses on the decline of infrastructures that serve as guardrails to prevent violence, such as democracy, legislation, and independent media. Using personal stories, propaganda, (social) media, and design, States of Violence explores how political, religious, and cultural violence is mediated, investigated, censored, or communicated. Can we ask ourselves how we ended up in this ‘state of violence’? Or can we, by better understanding its complexity, resist it and bring about a more peaceful future?
