Open Call: Designer(s) Young Makers Studio 2025

Framer Framed is looking for recently graduated artists or designers with a passion for education and pedagogy for a work placement designing the Young Makers Studio 2025. Apply by 3rd November!

Framer Framed is looking for one or more applicants with a passion for education and pedagogy to design and produce the Young Makers Studio, giving shape to the education space at Framer Framed. We are looking for someone who wants to develop a social practice and who is interested in creating an art environment that challenges children. You will work independently – possibly with other selected applicants – gain practical experience and be mentored by Framer Framed’s education team. The studio will be open to children from March to May 2025. Preparation will start in November 2024. The application deadline is Sunday 3 November 2024. For the application procedure, see below.

Young Makers Studio

Framer Framed believes in the creation of art outside traditional educational and institutional structures, and in learning through the sharing and exchange of perspectives and experiences. At Framer Framed, the focus is not only on learning, but also ‘unlearning’. While learning is often based on acquiring knowledge, skills and behaviours, unlearning is a critique of education as the one-way transfer of knowledge. It seeks to ‘unlearn’ certain forms of knowledge and often unconscious ways of thinking and acting. It requires active critical examination of normative practices to unlearn what is taken for granted and puts collaboration at the centre.

At our location on Oranje-Vrijstaatkade in Amsterdam-East, children aged 4 and up are welcome to come and play, explore, experiment, make or just be in the Young Makers Studio. In a space where major themes are presented, we think it is important that our youngest visitors can also participate and experience art in their own way. With the Young Makers Studio, we offer an inviting learning environment for young children to do their own research and experiment creatively with different (natural) materials.

To design the studio, we collaborate with artists who have just completed their training. With the Young Makers Studio as a learning workplace, we give recently graduate makers a chance to gain practical experience designing inviting learning environments for children. The design of the first Young Makers Studio in 2022 came from Jesse Greulich, and in 2023 Anastasia Afonina designed the studio.

Assignment and planning

Designing and producing the Young Makers Studio is an opportunity for newly graduated makers to gain hands-on experience of different aspects of working at an arts institution. You will be supervised by Framer Framed’s education team, where together we will look at what you want to learn and how you can develop your ideas. The assignment has several phases.

In the period mid-November to mid-January 2025, the design phase takes place, and initial ideas are developed into a concrete plan. During this period, the time investment is on average one day per week. From mid-January to end-February 2025, production takes place. In the production phase, the time investment is on average 2 days per week. Production days can be planned flexibly, in consultation with the education team and in coordination with the schedule of Framer Framed’s production team.

Especially for production, you will take the initiative, and we ask for proactive commitment. After the opening, the Young Makers Studio will be open for school visits, and you will keep in touch with the education team about the use of the installation and possible adjustments.

Selected participants receive a remuneration of €1000 per month on a self-employed basis (excluding VAT) during the design phase and €2000 per month (excluding VAT) in the production phase.

Profile

This open call is for recent graduates who have experience in designing and producing an interactive installation and want to gain more experience in the cultural field. You have a keen interest in education and how young children playfully imagine, create and learn from their ideas. You have a proactive attitude and can use feedback constructively into the process. You can work independently and function well in a team. You are open to possible collaboration with other young makers. You are available from mid-November 2024 until the end of February 2025, and thereafter occasionally in consultation with the education team. We particularly encourage recent graduates of design schools to apply.

Application Procedure

We ask interested parties to apply with a motivation letter and CV. In the letter, we would like to read more about your vision on education and initial ideas for the Young Makers Studio. Applications will be assessed by Framer Framed’s education team. Depending on the outcome, we will select one or more individuals for a second interview. The selection committee will assess the applications based on the quality of the proposal and its relevance to the objectives of the Young Makers Studio and the principles of the organisation. The interviews will take place in the period 11 until 14 November 2024.

The results of the open call will be announced at the end of October. In the event of a rejected application, feedback can be provided upon request, by phone or email, depending on the availability of Framer Framed’s education team.
