Koštana Banović

Koštana Banović (b. 1960) is a multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker, born in Sarajevo, and now based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She works with various media including drawing, performances, video installations, and film. Her cinematic practice addresses the interaction between experimental and cinéma vérité documentary styles, and includes a reflexivity belonging to the category of essay-film.

Her films, such as May I Enter (2010), use rituals to engage the body and the senses to by-pass the universe of words and thoughts. These rituals, and narratives of the Self and Other, blur the clear distinctions of language. And they thus open up a space beyond control, where the notions of Self and Other can be reinvented. Banović was a guest speaker for the panel Artist as Anthropologist, about the boundaries between art and science, with Framer Framed and Imagine IC Amsterdam on 12 May 2011.

She has also worked as an educator at the University of Arts in Utrecht (HKU) in the Fine Arts department, and guest teacher at various (post-)graduate institutes such as the Dutch Art Institute in Arnhem and the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Since 2018, she has been completing a residency as the Artistic Director of KAMEN in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
