Alberta Whittle

Alberta Whittle (b. 1980 Bridgetown, Barbados; lives and works between Scotland and South Africa)

Alberta Whittle earned a BA (Hons) from Edinburgh College of Art and is a Masters graduate from Glasgow School of Art, participating in an exchange at Concordia University (Montréal). Since graduating in 2011, Whittle has received commissions from the Museum of London, where she liaised with refugee and migrant community groups to present an interactive installation, referring to migration and displacement.

Whittle makes collaged sculptural forms, using video, painting and textile processes. She choreographs interactive installations, interventions and performances as site-specific artworks. Her practice is concerned with the construction of stereotypes of race, nationality and gender, and considers the motivation behind their perpetuation and the different forms in which they are manifested.
