Pain Perdu workshop with Studio CoPain

As part of the Bread Art in the Molenwijk exhibition, celebrating the cultural and social traditions of bread and baking, participants had the opportunity to collaborate with the artists of Studio CoPain in building a large-scale edible bread sculpture. On 24 and 25 October, the exhibition concludes with a festive finissage. On 24 October, a Pain Perdu workshop by Studio CoPain invites visitors to help transform the sculpture into delicious French toast. The following day, 25 October, the exhibition officially closes with a communal breakfast – an opportunity to gather, share and enjoy the final outcome together.

From October 7 to 11, participants came together to create a participatory bread artwork at Werkplaats Molenwijk together with art collective Studio CoPain. Over the course of five days, they joined forces to reflect on the ways bread brings people together, in collaboration, in celebration and in mourning. Local residents were warmly invited to join in during the creation process: kneading, baking, and decorating parts of the sculpture. The sculpture is currently on view together with the exhibition, from Wednesday to Saturday between 12:00 and 17:00. The finissage takes place on 24 and 25 October, where Studio CoPain makes French toast of the bread sculpture and gives it a second life by eating it together.

Studio CoPain is the artist-in-residence for our Bread Art in the Molenwijk programme – an ode to the cultural creativity of the neighbourhood, centered around bread. As part of the celebrations surrounding Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, participatory art workshops have taken place from March to October. During this period, the Bread Atelier served as a collective artist-in-residence, where artists and local residents collaborated on bread-related projects, supported by the mobile community bakery BuurOven.
