Screening: Stories from Tomorrow – Sinophone Imaginations of Resilient Futures
Join for a screening of Sinophone video artworks by Li Yi-Fan, aaajiao, Fei Yining, He Zike and Yin-Ju Chen – each envisioning the future in a different way. Alongside the screenings, there are Q&As with artists aaajiao and Li Yi-Fan, as well as introductions by Dr. Evelyn Wan and Dr. Jori Snels.
What futures are left in times of multiple crises? In a time when the future is slowly being cancelled, as Mark Fisher said, is there any hope beyond capitalist realism? What futures can be imagined while looking beyond the European perspective?
Aside from official imaginations of the so-called China Dream, art and culture prove an important terrain to imagine different futures. The increased popularity of science fiction, such as The Three-Body Problem, as well as the proliferation of digital art in which alternative futures are imagined, attest to this. But beyond China, Sinophone works of video art emerging from different places also imagine different futures and probe their intersections with pasts and presents. What can be learned from the futures they produce? Do they point to a more resilient, sustainable and inclusive future?
