Film Screening and Conversation: An Afternoon with Qin Dao (On Kino)
On 15 November 2024, Framer Framed hosts a film screening by artist, filmmaker and publisher Qin Dao. Qin Dao, owner of the self-claimed film theatre On Kino, is joined by filmmaker Bo Wang and researcher Wang-Yun Yen. Together, they discuss how a community space for screenings can encourage critical reflection on socio-political issues as well as nurture diverse participation and collective action.
On Kino has organised screenings since 2017, often comprising rare, forgotten, or orphan films on 16mm, 35mm, 8.75mm, super 8 or VHS formats, most of which have been discovered by Qin Dao himself. The programme at Framer Framed includes two films: Palestinian People Will Win (China, 1971, 16mm, black and white, Mandarin, 25 min) – a 1971 documentary made by China Central Studio of News Reels Production on the Palestinian struggle – and Canton Cinema Critic: Part II: A Letter to Martin Scorsese from Macau (China, 2021-2025, Digital, Colour, English subtitles, 18 min), a film essay from and about Canton by Qin Dao & Geng Teng Tian.
In addition, Qin Dao presents two sets of Cinema Tea: one 16mm film about Guangzhou (Colour, English subtitles, 20 min) and one about Shanghai (DV, Colour, English subtitles, 13 min).
