About the part that art plays in a globalising society

Welcome to the Village

Welcome to The Village is a three-day festival for performing arts, visual arts, social design, food, and innovation that takes place annually in July in the Groene Ster nature reserve, just outside Leeuwarden. The festival is inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals both on stage and behind the scenes. This means that we are committed to a world that works, with less inequality between different population groups, where men and women are equal, which runs on sustainable energy, and where a lot of attention is paid to innovation.

We see our festival as a temporary society on a scale. Within that framework, together with all our partners, we are investigating the rules for our society in 2030 and the way to a world that works. We believe that art and culture are a catalyst for social innovation, and a ‘festival’ is a place that attracts a very diverse group of people who, due to the nature of the event, are open to new people and ideas. We use the free atmosphere of a festival to come up with new rules and ideas and to experiment with those new rules directly in reality.
