Sterre Herstel

Sterre Herstel is a freelance programmemaker and coordinator of neighbourhood-based, participatory and community art projects. As the coordinator of Werkplaats Molenwijk, she aims at developing the project space as an arts and culture hub for and from within the neighbourhood, providing a bridge between art (residencies) and the Molenwijk community.

She thrives on making art and culture accessible and inclusive to those who have less affinity with the art world. She holds a theoretical background in Cultural Heritage, Anthropology and Art Education, combined with work experience in both community organisations and art/culture institutions. Her interests lie in bridging these two worlds, inspired by community-building theories, critical, feminist and affective pedagogies and notions of co-creation.

Her work is driven by questions such as: How do you create an environment to create participation? How do people move from participation to co-creation and holding ownership? How do we make transitions and translations to make the art worlds and its words inclusive to audiences outside of those worlds? In this quest she aims to hold extra space for cultural and neuro-inclusivity and to work with an affective, loving, supportive pedagogy inspired by bell hooks.

She has developed participation projects for and with The Beach, Foam Photography Museum, Van Eesteren Museum, West Beach Film Festival, Buurtwerkplaats Noordhof, VoorUit, Pakhuis de Zwijger and Darkmatter Collective.
