About the part that art plays in a globalising society

Framer Framed

Marieke Zwart

Marieke Zwart (born 1987 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands) is an Amsterdam based artist who uses drawings and videos in her work.

She explores spaces of contact that build on socially engaged practices like residences for psychiatric patients and homes that provide health care. Her interest in social definitions of empowerment and independence, the Dutch colonial past and personal narratives reflect on art historical and relational issues in relation to society.

She also works as a guest teacher and organises summer school programs to connect with young artists. In 2019, Marieke was part of the exhibition Elsewheres Within Here curated by Jo-Lene Ong at Framer Framed, Amsterdam.

Marieke Zwart presented a set of drawn photographs for the exhibition Drawing Stories (2020). Drawing Stories is a partnering project of Framer Framed presented as part of the online exhibition Corona in the City, organised by Amsterdam Museum. Her work The River was also selected to be exhibited outdoors of the museum.
