Alexander Supartono
Alexander Supartono is an art historian and curator specialising in modern and contemporary art in Southeast Asia. He obtained a PhD in History of Photography from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He lectures on photographic theories and histories at Edinburgh Napier University (UK).
Presently he is one of principal investigators at the Getty Research Institute’s Photography Unbound project that explores computational methods to analyse large collections of digital images and the application of computer vision to art historical questions (2021-ongoing).
Alexander Supartono is one of the founding member of Taring Padi, a collective of artists from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The group was formed in 1998 during the general upheaval following the fall of Suharto. His recent curatorial activities include Flame of Solidarity (2022), the presentation of Taring Padi collective at documenta fifteen (2022) in Kassel, Germany and Tanah Merdeka (2023), a Taring Padi exhibition at Framer Framed, Amsterdam.
Latest publications include The silent waiting: Javanese Antiquity and 19th century photography in the Dutch East Indies (2022), National Gallery Singapore.
