Two upcoming publications give an impression of the current debate about globalization and diversity in contemporary art.

Following the conference Onbegrensd Verzamelen (Collecting Without Borders, 2009) the publication under the editorship of Mariska ter Horst Changing Perspectives: Dealing with Globalisation in the Presentation and Collection of Contemporary Art (KIT Publishers 2012) is to be launched.

The second publication to be launched that same evening is UNFIXED: Photography and Postcolonial Perspectives in Contemporary Art (UNFIXED Projects and Jap Sam Books, 2012), edited by Sara Blokland and Asmara Pelupessy.

On the publications

Changing Perspectives
The Netherlands sees a lively increase in the debate around globalization and diversity in contemporary art. During the conference Collecting Without Borders (2009) professionals from art museums, ethnographic museums and cultural history museums spoke about presenting and collecting contemporary global art, exploring the opportunities for inter-museum interdisciplinary cooperation. Following the symposium the essays presented during the conference were edited by Mariska ter Horst, forming thus the body of publication Changing Perspectives: Dealing with Globalisation in the Presentation and Collection of Contemporary Art (2012), published by KIT Publishers. The ongoing debate surrounding global art is sketched in this book from different perspectives: museological practice, academic debate and artistic and social critique. Integral component of the debate is the institutional self-reflection posing the question how various museums and art institutions approach developments such as globalization in art. Investigating the ways in which it translates to exhibition practice and museum collection policy. Discussing processes of inclusion and exclusion along with mechanisms of (re) presentation.

UNFIXED
At the same time, Jap Sam Books and UNFIXED Projects are releasing the publication UNFIXED: Photography and Postcolonial Perspectives in Contemporary Art. Edited by Sara Blokland (NL) and Asmara Pelupessy (US/NL), this publication is part of a longer term project that included an artist-residency, symposium and exhibition at CBK Dordrecht (2010). The book explores photography from a postcolonial perspective with contributions from an international group of writers, artists and researchers working in contemporary art, photography and cultural analysis. Critical topics include such as the migration and circulation of photography, vernacular photography, archives, memory, diaspora, self-representation, appropriation, visual sovereignty, exoticism and cultural protocol.
