Language Café: The Language of Oppression and Resistance
In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Europe welcomes Ukrainian refugees with open arms and a different take on solidarity and sanctions. It appears that the term “refugee” has multiple layers and that fleeing a country to avoid danger does not automatically qualify you as a “conventional” refugee. Over time, we have witnessed solidarity called into question and sanctions banned or criminalised in some European nations. In this encounter of “Language of Oppression and Resistance,” we will get together to explore these terminologies as we notice a shift in tone from many with anti-migration sentiments.

Is a refugee identifiable by their appearance, race, skin color, or other attributes? What are the distinctions between the different types of solidarity? And on what grounds are solidarities permitted or condemned? Join the Language Café for an open discussion on these questions.
The Language Café is a discussion forum for language, semantics, and translation. In its first encounter, The Language of Oppression and Resistance, we tackled over four sessions the language used in media, social media, power plays, the battle of narratives, and the dominant discourse on the Palestine question, as Said put forward. Among the many terms and concepts debated are Nakba, Intifada, and Apartheid. In this work and the accompanying group discussion, we continue to unpack the role terminology plays in describing, deescalating, neutralising, and censoring.
