Workshop: 100 Butterflies for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Girls, and Non-Binary People
On 4 March, Framer Framed hosts the workshop 100 Butterflies for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Girls, and Non-Binary People, an initiative by feminist textile collective Warmi Küyen. They aim to promote the creation of safe spaces and powerful feminist networks that encourage reflection and dialogue. With a focus on migrant communities in the Netherlands, Warmi Küyen helps to develop personal and collective strategies that contribute to gender equality and the eradication of gender-based violence.
Warmi Küyen seeks to incite and activate collective political reflection and social connection, addressing urgent shared challenges in a creative way. They invite everyone to practice basic but inspiring textile handcrafts, such as appliqué and hand embroidery, informed by personal stories, experiences, and dreams. Together with participants, they will create a collective textile inspired by the Arpillera technique (a Chilean textile collage).
Every participant is invited to create a butterfly (as a symbol for women and non-binary adults) or a caterpillar (as a symbol for girls and non-binary teenagers), which will be joined together on a large canvas (3.0 m x 1.5 m) embroidered by Warmi Küyen.
The finalised Arpillera will be taken to the streets during the feminist march on International Women’s Day in Amsterdam on 8 March. It will then continue to travel, accompanying demonstrations, seminars, and galleries in other cities and spaces, spreading its message from 2025 onward.
Register here to join.
