Sofia Notenboom

Sofia Notenboom (she/her) is an art educator, visual artist, and designer. With a background in sound engineering, she changed course and made room for visual arts. She graduated from the Visual Arts and Design Teacher Training programme at ArtEZ in Arnhem and has since been working as a freelance artist-educator. She is active at Kunstenlab in Deventer, Stichting de Vrolijkheid, and, from September 2025, also at Framer Framed, where she will take on the role of Culture Coach at the Kolom Praktijkcollege in Amsterdam-Noord.

Notenboom sees art as a means of encouraging children and young people to think about who they are, the world they live in, and how they relate to that world. In her view, art is an excellent way of stimulating awareness and reflection.

In her own visual practice, Notenboom focuses on the experience of human memory. She considers memories to be something changeable, constantly in motion – and perhaps even unreliable. This research often translates into installations that combine photography, video and printing techniques, sometimes bundled in a booklet or zine.

During her studies, Notenboom did an internship at the education department of Framer Framed, where she collaborated on the Children’s Workshop and the Elance – Strong Girls Meet meetings, and also developed and supervised guest lessons at the Kiem Montessori. This experience opened up the world of extracurricular art education for her – a world she is now enthusiastically part of once again.
