Rossel Chaslie

Rossel Chaslie (he/him) is a self-taught artist with an expressive and contemporary drawing style, rooted in a strong art historical tradition. His work takes the form of static drawings on paper or digital animations, which enable him to reach a wide audience, from young to old. In his practice, Chaslie explores social themes that are closely related to his own experiences: those of a young bi-cultural man trying to find his way, both as a creator and as an individual, within a polarised Dutch society that is still struggling with its colonial past.

His distinctive, authentic style remains recognisable in both his autonomous work and his commissions. Chaslie lives and works in Amsterdam.

His connection with Framer Framed began in 2020, when he attended a lecture by Jennifer Tosch on colonialism in the botanical gardens. Since then, he has actively followed their exhibitions and public programmes. In 2023, he received the Young Art Support Amsterdam Award, which was presented at Framer Framed in 2024.

Chaslie was recently Amsterdam City Artist (2024) and stayed in residence at the Thami Mnyele Foundation. He also works on various commissions, gives drawing workshops and continues to deepen and expand his artistic practice.
