About the part that art plays in a globalising society

Jaya Pelupessy

Jaya Pelupessy (1989) is a visual artist working with photography. He explores the meaning of images through photographs, installations and 16mm film. By analysing the technical processes of reproduction, he questions the relationships between the copy, the original, and the final product in relation to the processes that generate them. Pelupessy is fascinated by the growing role photography plays in our daily lives. We increasingly perceive the world through the camera lens: we share moments and experiences in the form of reproductions. In doing so, we stage our own reality.

He combines elements from both found and original visual materials differently to create his images, using these reproduction processes in an alternative way to construct his images. This often results in “loops” within his work, in which reproductions are reproduced. In this way, the work prompts us to linger over the very conditions through which images come into being and to reflect on how these processes shape our perception of the world around us.

Pelupessy’s works form part of the collections of leading institutions, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, FOAM Amsterdam, Centraal Museum Utrecht, the Nederlands Fotomuseum, the Ekard Collection, the Steenbergen Collection, Amsterdam UMC Collection and the Eneco Collection, as well as numerous private collections. Pelupessy has presented his work in esteemed venues such as the Centraal Museum Utrecht, the Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam, FOAM Amsterdam, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Frankfurt, Red Hook Labs in New York, Mai ManĂł House in Budapest, C/O Berlin, the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam and at Paris Photo.
