LIMBO: Engaged scholarship and queer exilic narratives

LIMBO is a project welcoming all queer individuals with a refugee background; a creative research collaboration between queer/migrant artists and community organisers, Framer Framed and Refugee Academy.
The product of this collaboration will be enacted in a series of workshops hosted by various creatives – Maha Youssef, Rochita Loenen-Ruiz, Lamin Barrow, Parisa Akbarzadehpoladi, Jerrold Saija, Mala Badi & Sarah Naqvi. LIMBO series wraps up its activities with a conclusive exhibition.

LIMBO is a project welcoming all queer individuals with a refugee background, thus if you are one of them, feel free to register – for free. Each workshop will assess creativity from different perspectives, ranging from poetry lessons to storytelling on topics of consent within queer/migrant/refugee narratives.

What unites all the workshops is the aim to create a safe environment for all participants, as well as to freely share stories, experiences, and concerns with the community. The workshops are organised on Sundays, running from the 30th of January until the 27th of March 2022. Outside the workshops, the participants are welcome at the space every Wednesdays between 12:00 and 17:00, as the researchers, Fabian and Noa will be there engaging with additional work on this or related project(s).

LIMBO is an initiative by Fabian Holle (PhD researcher) from Refugee Academy at Vrije Universiteit (VU) and Noa Bawits (Master’s Sociology researcher) from Framer Framed. Both are conducting research that encompasses the topic of community engaged scholarship among the refugee/migrant communities in the Netherlands. The participants of the workshops will, therefore, have a chance to contribute to this study, by voicing their opinions about their (migrant) experience with the Dutch institutions, their life in the Netherlands, and the concepts of refugeeness and queerness in their contexts.

An interview with LIMBO co-creators Fabian Holle, Noa Bawits, and participating artist Ariya can be found here.

    Conclusive presentation at Framer Framed
The LIMBO series will wrap its activities with a conclusive presentation at Framer Framed.
The final presentation and opening event will be a chance for all the participants to show some of their works created throughout the workshops and will represent a coronation of the previous workshop activities. The exhibiting will be optional, along with the identity of the artist of the work (exhibited with the name, anonymously or under a pseudonym). A small publication with the outcome of the project is available at the Vrije Universiteit and Framer Framed.

    Program
On March 27, 2022 the final presentation of LIMBO will be opened by Fabian Holle (you can read his opening speech here) and a queer program.
For this opening we are collaborating with Sehaq Queer Refugees Group. Sehaq invites Sepideh Khodarahmi, Sarah Naqvi, Lamin Barrow (hosting an open mic), Alaa + Queers and Meram to perform and celebrate our collaboration, which is intended as a start of a long-term continuation. Moreover, we celebrate Mama Kil’s 30th birthday! Mama Kil, part of Sehaq and LIMBO, organises the opening. Feel welcome to engage with queer exilic narratives in the presentation, and we hope you will enjoy our queer exilic performances!
