Dutch launch: Compendium Rights of Nature
The Embassy of the North Sea and Framer Framed cordially invite you for the launch of the Dutch edition of the Compendium Rights of Nature — Case studies from six continents.
The programme takes place on Wednesday 2 February 2022 from 2-4 pm in the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes in Framer Framed.
Worldwide, an increasing number of natural entities – forests, rivers, mountains, even Mother Earth herself – are being recognized as so-called legal persons. In this legal revolution, nature is no longer seen as an object to be used and discarded, but rather as a subject with intrinsic value and, importantly, legally enforceable rights. The Embassy of the North Sea commissioned Laura Burgers and Jessica den Outer – both experts in the field of nature rights – to author the compendium Rights of Nature – Case studies from six continents. In the publication, the authors analyse some examples per continent of how the rights of nature have been recognized within the specific context, as well as their current implementation and enforcement.
The rights of nature have a symbolic value: they reflect a holistic world, in which humans and non-humans are seen as intrinsically linked and interdependent. This vision forms part of the philosophy of many indigenous cultures. In Europe, there are several initiatives of rights of nature, but legal personality has never been granted. During the meeting on February 2, we will discuss with lawyers, nature organisations and initiatives whether and how we can translate the recognition of rights of nature to the Western (legal) system.

About the CICC
The book launch takes place in the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC), a collaboration between Indian academic, writer, lawyer and activist Radha D’Souza and Dutch artist Jonas Staal, commissioned by Framer Framed. The project consists of a large-scale installation in the form of a tribunal for the prosecution of transnational corporations’ intergenerational climate crimes.
