Celebration of Bread: Building a Bread Sculpture with Studio CoPain

As a part of the exhibition Bread Art in the Molenwijk, on the culture and social practices surrounding bread, dough and baking, from 7 to 11 October you will have the opportunity to help build the center piece of the exhibition: a large-scale edible bread sculpture. Drop by Werkplaats Molenwijk to knead, decorate, and bake the sculpture together with the artists of Studio CoPain. The bread sculpture will be eaten together during a celebratory finissage of Bread Art in the Molenwijk on 25 October.

From October 7 to 11, we’ll be creating a participatory bread artwork at Werkplaats Molenwijk together with art collective Studio CoPain. Over the course of five days, we’ll join forces to reflect on the ways bread brings people together – in collaboration, in celebration, and in mourning. Local residents are warmly invited to join in during the creation process: kneading, baking, and decorating parts of the sculpture. On October 11, during the opening of the Bread Art in the Molenwijk exhibition, you’ll have one last chance to add your personal decorations. After the opening, the sculpture will be on view together with the exhibition, from Wednesday to Saturday between 12:00 and 17:00. We end the exhibition by making French toast of the bread sculpture and give it a second life by eating it together.

Studio CoPain is the artist-in-residence for our Bread Art in the Molenwijk programme – an ode to the cultural creativity of the neighbourhood, centered around bread. As part of the celebrations surrounding Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, participatory art workshops have taken place from March to October. During this period, the Bread Atelier served as a collective artist-in-residence, where artists and local residents collaborated on bread-related projects, supported by the mobile community bakery BuurOven.
