On 9 August, artist and activist Prince Frimpong invites you to The Ghana Queer Underground, a multimedia presentation examining what it means to reclaim one’s existence as a queer individual in Ghana. Through spoken word performances, a screening and a talk, it offers an intimate glimpse into Ghana’s vibrant queer underground culture.

The presentation centres around the Ghanaian ballroom scene, where resistance is not only a form of protest, but also a celebration of queer joy. The works dive into different modes of resistance and solidarity amid anti-rights and anti-gender movements in Ghana.

During the event, there’s a screening of the short film The Source, the final chapter of Map Your Love, an experimental film anthology that examines the complexities of queer love in countries where homosexuality is criminalised. Shot entirely on smartphones by emerging queer filmmakers from across Africa, the anthology captures raw, authentic narratives from ten different countries, filmed over the course of three years through participatory filmmaking practices.

Rather than focusing on conventional “coming-out” narratives, the anthology delves into the diverse cultural expressions of love, selfhood, and acceptance. Due to the significant risks faced by the creators, Map Your Love is shared only with limited audiences. We ask for your trust and discretion for this screening appreciation of the courage and urgency which underscores these stories.
