Up/Root Democracy 3: A Seat for Nature
Up/Root Democracy showcases the work of researchers, artists and activists; amidst an intersection of crisis, this program delves into how systems of extraction – be it digital, mineral or intellectual etc. – can be a force for or against democratisation.
The third session of Up/Root Democracy takes the shape of an online panel featuring research collective The Soft Protest Digest, INLAND (artist and agroecologist Fernando García-Dory), as well as Anne van Leeuwen (co-founder of Embassy of the North Sea). The panel is moderated by Sissel Marie Tonn.
As a society heavily dependent on the exploitation of natural resources, overproduction and overburdened ecological systems, there is an urgent need for a renewed attitude towards the soil, the oceans, and the living and non-living actors with whom we share the planet. The upcoming sessions of our Up/Root Democracy series will focus on alternative ways of farming, consuming, and representing more-than-humans, which can bring forward new possibilities for the democratisation of these processes.
In Session 3: A Seat for Nature, invited panelists The Soft Protest Digest, INLAND, and the Embassy of the North Sea will discuss their practices. Ranging from our gardens to the bottom of the oceans, this session explores emerging understandings of human and non-human cooperation (‘zoöp’), the use of fiction and story-telling as means for environmental justice, and alternative representation policy-making. What attitudes and tools should we adopt as we restore equity between non-human organisms, anthropocentric systems, and natural landscapes? How can we give a seat back to nature?

About the series
Up/Root Democracy is a collaboration of Framer Framed and Network Democracy supported by Europe Direct. Up/Root Democracy is an online public program focused on extractive systems undermining human/non-human rights. Looking for a potential balance for legitimate, ethical and sustainable systems in the Anthropocene, we need to consider new forms of political representation, legislation and re-politicise data and technology. Up/Root Democracy showcases the work of researchers, artists and activists; amidst an intersection of crisis, this program delves into how systems of extraction – digital, mineral, etc. – can be a force for or against democratisation.
The program is shown in the run-up to the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC) by writer and lawyer Radha D’Souza and visual artist Jonas Staal, which we will be presented at Framer Framed in fall 2021. In this Tribunal, human/nature rights offenses of the present will be held accountable for future generations.
