Socialist Cosmopolitanism and Its Afterlife – from On Kino Archives

On 30 April, Framer Framed hosts an evening with Guangzhou-based artist, filmmaker and publisher Qin Dao – owner of the self-claimed film theatre On Kino – who will share several collected works from his archives. Qin Dao will also be in dialogue with filmmaker and researcher Bo Wang to reflect on notions of solidarity and socialist cosmopolitanism during the socialist time in China and the changing imagination on the global south after the economic reform.

On Kino has organised screenings since 2017, often comprising rare, forgotten, or orphan films, most of which have been discovered by Qin Dao himself. During the event, Qin Dao will share works ranging from 16mm film produced during the 60s-70s, to VHS tapes from the 1980s, along with print materials. This includes a film produced by the Chinese socialist regime that supported the resistance against the US during the Vietnam War, along with videos from his VHS collection that fictionalise Southeast Asia as a left-behind “no man’s land”.

Places are limited so please register your attendance here.

This event is in English. Admission is free.
