Book Presentation: Slamming Doors: Falling Out and Fighting Back in a Housing Crisis
Slamming Doors: Falling Out and Fighting Back in a Housing Crisis is a new publication that brings together writers, academics and community organisers to reflect on housing justice, community organising and feminist labour. On 23 April 2026, Framer Framed hosts initiators and co-editors Winnie Herbstein and Mason Leaver-Yap for a conversation on the book’s themes and development.
Co-published by Framer Framed and University of Edinburgh, the book brings together writers, academics and community organisers to address a pressing issue: the ongoing housing crisis in Glasgow. Although centred on a specific locale, the topic resonates on a global scale, indicating the housing crisis as a symptom of oppressive capitalist conditions and emphasising the critical role of community and solidarity in navigating them.
Acting as a ‘user’s manual’, Slamming Doors mobilises text and images, archives and conversations to unpack the work of DIY learning, grassroots organising and how to record, disseminate and learn from collective struggles. It explores housing struggles, community organising, and reproductive labour in Glasgow, highlighting how we document and share these stories. Additionally, it reflects ongoing relationships with communities and spaces of solidarity. Writers, academics, and activists were invited to contribute, pairing their texts with archival imagery that has been instrumental in the research of these films.
Winnie Herbstein graduated from Glasgow School of Art (Environmental Art). She studied Women in Construction at the City of Glasgow College and is a founding member of Slaghammers, a woman, trans and non-binary metal workshop. Her work focuses on historical and contemporary forms of organising, in relation to housing and the architecture and formation of space. She was a resident at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam (2021-2023).
