Yannick Luzuaki
Yannick Luzuaki (b. 1984, Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo) is a painter and costume designer. Luzuaki pursued his graduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Kinshasa where he obtained a bachelor degree in Fine Arts – specialisation painting. After moving to France in 2010, he attended the High School of Arts of the Rhine (HEAR) in Strasbourg, and obtained another diploma in fine arts – painting.
For the 2018 Framer Framed exhibition A Blueprint for Toads and Snakes by Sammy Baloji, Luzuaki created the painted panels on the Chura na Nyoka stage installation, particularly inspired by Congolese painting in the style of Pilipili Mulungoy. Another recent project by Luzuaki, Windows on Urban Life, was a collaboration with artist and scenographer Bolankoko as part of the exhibition Congo Art Works initiated by the AfricaMuseum (Tervuren). The exhibition was curated by Sammy Baloji and Bambi Ceuppens and presented in May 2016 at the Brussels Bozar and at the Garage Museum in Moscow. The installation accentuated the advertising aspect of popular painters in Congo, based on the photographic archive of the collector Bogumil Jewsiewicki.
