Marjolijn Dijkman

Marjolijn Dijkman (1978, NL) lives and works in Brussels (BE) and Saint-Mihiel (FR). Her practice is research-based and multi-disciplinary including film, photography, sculpture and installation. The works themselves can be seen as a form of speculative-fiction; partly based on facts and research but often brought into the realm of the imagination. Her work is concerned with residues of enlightenment ideology, manifestations of collective memory, blind spots of representation. Collaborations with other artists, thinkers and experts are an important part of her life and practice as an artist and have been a key motivation to co-found Enough Room for Space in 2005.

Marjolijn Dijkman is co-founder of the artistic research collective Enough Room for Space (ERforS), an interdependent art initiative that initiates and coordinates events, residencies, research projects and exhibitions worldwide. ERforS acts as freely as possible, always putting the context and the idea before the medium, challenging the barriers between different disciplines (artistic, scientific or activist).

Marjolijn Dijkman is part of On-Trade-Off, an artistic trajectory initiated by the artists’ initiatives Picha (DRC) and Enough Room for Space (BE). Together with a public program, the exhibitions On-Trade-Off: La contrepartie (2020) and Charging Myth (2023) shows works by Sammy Baloji, Marjolijn Dijkman, Maarten Vanden Eynde, Musasa, Jean Katambayi, Georges Senga and Daddy Tshikaya, among others. The starting point for the research project On-Trade-Off is the raw material lithium. A naturally occurring element (number three on the periodic table), lithium is currently considered to be ‘the new black gold’ because of its crucial role in the global transition towards a ‘green and fossil fuel free economy’.

“I strongly believe that the critical challenges that are at the core of On-Trade-Off can best be faced collectively and from a multitude of perspectives and artistic voices.”

Marjolijn Dijkman’s work has been presented at international venues such as Edith-Ruß-Haus für Medienkunst; Oldenburg, ICA, London; Contemporary Art Center, Cincinnati; Lenbachhaus, Munich; Spike Island, Bristol; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; Berkeley Art Museum, Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City; Hessel Museum, Annandale-on-Hudson; De Hallen, Haarlem and Framer Framed, Amsterdam. She has participated in numerous biennials, including Manifesta’s Parallèles du Sud, Marseille; Lubumbashi Biennale; Screen City Biennial, Stavanger; Sydney Biennial; Shanghai Biennial; Sharjah Biennial; and Mercosul Biennial.
