Exhibition: Bread Art in the Molenwijk
From 11 to 25 October, the exhibition Bread Art in the Molenwijk takes place at Werkplaats Molenwijk, Framer Framed’s project space in Amsterdam-Noord. The exhibition examines cultural and social practices surrounding bread, dough and baking, and explores bread through themes such as the body, protection, care, scarcity, protest, celebration, hospitality and togetherness.
In response to the enthusiasm among local residents for bread and baking, Werkplaats Molenwijk transformed itself into a Bread Atelier over the past seven months. Kneading, baking, and tasting took place with the help of the BuurOven as a mobile bakery. Artists and collectives with a practice related to bread – Anita Kluge, Common Ground, Lenn Cox & Suzanne Bernhardt, Erik Wong and the Rietveld TXT students, Studio CoPain, and Zelfgemaakt! – were invited by Werkplaats Molenwijk and artist-in-residence Tina Lenz to share their imagination with residents.
The artists organised various artistic workshops on cultural rituals and creative traditions surrounding bread. By collectively shaping stories, various bread-related concepts became the cause for new discoveries. This exchange of knowledge, as a way of learning from and with one another, cultivated memories surrounding bread heritage. The exhibition displays the results of the artists and local residents’ work over the past few months.
