Report: How to make an Amsterdam dumpling - Workshop by Anas Chao of Ministry of Dumpling Affairs
On 15 July, Anas Chao visited Werkplaats Molenwijk for a dumpling making art workshop for his ongoing project Ministry of Dumplings Affairs. Chao works on self-initiated projects surrounding identity and belonging through food, film and writing.
Participants from the neighbourhood were asked to bring their own filling and the workshop served as a way to talk about our cultural trajectories: what constitutes our filling? Chao asked participants about the types of dumplings they knew from their country of origin. This led to a cultural exchange on dishes similar to dumplings from Turkey, Syria, Afghanistan, Morocco and the Netherlands. The workshop provided a platform for cultural dialogue around the question: what constitutes our filling? Participants learned the art of making dumplings and shared memories evoked by the ingredients. At the end of the session, Chao was invited by participants for another visit as they wrapped their homemade dumplings to take home and share with family members.
Anas Chao is Taiwanese and is born and raised in Saudi Arabia. His constant moving between the two countries has made his sense of identity and belonging ambiguous. This has led him to use autoethnography to make sense of his existence. He analyses his environment and explores how mechanisms of nationalism and capitalism are intertwined in forming a home.
