In the new year, Werkplaats Molenwijk is moving to a new spot around the corner: a beautiful former school building at Zuideinde 369. During the festive farewell to the current location and in honor of the Broodkunst in de Molenwijk program, design anthropologist Tina Lenz made a light projection that was cast on the Torenmolenflat, directly across from De Werkplaats.
The farewell party brought together an array of practices, voices and rituals. Fresh bread out of the BuurOven, Greek bites prepared by local chef Maria, songs of the Molenwijk Choir and making lanterns formed a temporary collective around care, attention and get-together. Bread not only functioned just as food, but as a bearer of stories, relations and shared knowledge.

When the evening fell in, the group moved outside. After a countdown, the kids of Molenwijk pushed the button, and a large projection appeared on the Torenmolenflat. An artwork unfolded on the facade, made up of bread artworks that have been made in recent months during the Broodkunst in de Molenwijk. During the winter months, residents were repeatedly surprised by their own creative processes and imaginations being returned to the neighbourhoods’ public space.

The light installation was part of the residency of artist Tina Lenz, who researched various rituals around bread together with residents and other artists. The projection is a collaboration of Tina Lenz, Beamsystems, and Framer Framed, supported by Gemeente Amsterdam Stadsdeel Noord.
