Nuraini Juliastuti

Nuraini Juliastuti is a trans-local practicing researcher and writer, focusing on art organisations, activism, illegality, alternative cultural production, vernacular archiving, and contemporary bestiaries. In 1999, Nuraini co-founded Kunci Study Forum & Collective in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Since 2016, Kunci has established the long-term project School of Improper Education. Nuraini develops Domestic Notes, a publication-based project that takes domestic and migrant spaces as sites to discuss everyday politics, the organisation of makeshift support systems, and women archives. With her family, Nuraini runs a small press, Reading Sideways Press, which publishes works and translations on the intersections of contemporary art, sports culture, literature, sound and other pressing matters. Nuraini teaches at the Master of Fine Art Department, HKU University of the Arts, Utrecht. Nuraini’s recent works include Commons Museums: Pedagogies for Taking Ownership of What is Lost (ICI Berlin Press, 2024), Stories of Wounds and Wonder (If I Can’t Dance, 2024), Tools for Radical Study: A Collection of Manuals (a collective editorial work with KUNCI Study Forum & Collective for MARCH Journal Special Edition 2024), Alternatif sebagai Strategi: Akses, Infrastruktur, Pengetahuan (Alternative as Strategy: Access, Infrastructure and Knowledge) (Reading Sideways Press, 2022).
