    Notes on a Returning Landscape

On 23 October 2026, Framer Framed organises a conversation between artist Areej Ashhab and curator Mariela Acuña on walking as an embodied research method, tracing the evolution of Ashhab’s practice and paying close attention to the impact that walking has had on her work. The afternoon is part of Ashhab’s 2026 ArtsLink International Fellowship and marks the opening of a presentation of her studio archive, on view until 6 November.

In his book Palestinian Walks (2007), Palestinian lawyer and human rights activist Raja Shehadeh documents decades of walking through the vanishing landscape of the West Bank, witnessing its fragmentation and enclosure under settler colonialism. In her work, Ashhab contemplates how this same landscape returns again and again through material and elemental cycles.

Ashhab is member of the Al-Block Collective, a group dedicated to counter-mapping the Palestinian landscape through collective walks. The practice of walking with others and listening to their stories in relation to place, trained her to walk through the world noticing traces of buried histories and asking questions of them. This attunement to the land and curiosity toward its materials and rhythms has led to several research and artistic projects. The conversation also address the political nature of walking in Palestine amid accelerating settler colonial violence and how this has shifted Ashhab’s understanding of her own work.

Several bodies of work by Ashhab and her collaborators from Al-Block Collective and Al-Wah’at Collective are on view at Framer Framed through a temporary installation that invites people to encounter Ashhab’s practice through past work and ephemera. Ashhab’s studio archive stays on view until 6 November. This conversation marks the culmination of Ashhab and Acuña’s residency together as part of the Artslink Fellowship Program, which afforded them three weeks of conversation and research together while being hosted by Framer Framed.

Please register here for the conversation on 23 October at 18:00.

Until 6 November, Ashhab’s presentation can be visited in the Framer Framed project space (between 23 and 30 Oct by appointment only).
