Lisa Hilli werd in 1979ngeboren in Rabaul, Papua Nieuw-Guinea. Ze woont en werkt in Melbourne, Australië.
Lisa Hilli behaalde in 2007 haar Bachelor of Fine Arts aan het Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), met mediakunst als specialisatie. Haar werk onderzoekt de problematiek en complexiteiten rondom cross-culturele identiteit, waarbij ze gebruik maakt van video-installaties, filmprojecten gericht op communities, en recentelijk ook de praktijk van ‘weaving’ (het zetten van weaves). In grote mate geïnspireerd door haar Papua Nieuw-Guineaanse identiteit, is het maken van kunst voor Hilli een proces om kennis te vergaren over culturele geschiedenissen. Daarbij is haar doel om de tradities die aan haar zijn doorgegeven levend te houden, door deze toe te passen in een hedendaagse context.
Hilli was medeoprichter van de Pacific Women’s Weaving Circle (PWWC) in 2010 en artistiek directeur en co-facilitator van Story Weavers: Pacific Youth Filmmaking Project ter gelegenheid van het Contemporary Pacific Arts Festival in 2013.
Ze had diverse solo-tentoonstellingen in binnen en buitenland. Bij Framer Framed nam ze deel aan de groepstentoonstelling Embodied Spaces (2015), samengesteld door Christine Eyene.
