Framer Framed is an exhibition space for socially engaged contemporary art. It’s exhibitions and public programmes are open to everyone, free of charge – offering people from all walks of life a place where they can feel at home, meet one another and develop ideas. We believe it’s very important that children and young people are introduced to local artists and international themes through our educational programme, and that grassroots cultural programmes are developed for the local community.

We believe that more people feel that art spaces are, by their very nature, places where one can think, imagine, question and speak freely – where new futures can be imagined. Globally, it is proving increasingly difficult to provide a space for critical art and artists. The global political climate is changing rapidly, and nearly three in four people in the world (72%) currently live in an autocracy. In 2004, 51% of the world’s population lived in a democracy, and by 2024 that figure will be 28%. So there is certainly something at stake. We offer a free space where diverse perspectives are explored and where lesser-known stories are heard.

By leaving a legacy to Framer Framed, you contribute to our shared ideals: supporting artists, researchers and communities who take risks. By providing artists with the space and resources to create new works and conduct artistic research, we support those who engage with urgent socio-political issues, even when their work is critical of existing power structures. We also believe that there should be programmes specifically for young people who do not naturally come into contact with arts education, and we are active in neighbourhoods where there is less cultural infrastructure.

Framer Framed is part of the Basic Cultural Infrastructure (BIS) scheme run by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Amsterdam Arts Plan. This ensures that the organisation is firmly established. At the same time, private support is vital to enable us to continue working independently, now and in the future. This ensures we remain free to address critical issues, continue to take risks and give space to new voices. You can, of course, specify a focus yourself.

Anyone who chooses to include Framer Framed in their will is choosing an accessible and engaged arts organisation at the heart of society. A place where art and imagination contribute to an inclusive cultural infrastructure for future generations.

If you are considering including Framer Framed in your will, you are very welcome to have a no-obligation converesation with co-director Josien Pieterse and our public engagement coordinator Didi Twickler.
